Cue Sir David Attenborough voiceover
Here we see the BMW 7-series in its natural habitat, incapacitated once again by its own stupidity. These beasts were hatched upon an unsuspecting public before reaching full term, and once released into the wild exhibited an immediate, worrisome, and irreversible decline in fitness. As a result, and to humanity’s great benefit, they are rapidly becoming extinct as keeping them alive is drastically more costly than simply putting them down. This fellow, a mature male of 12 years in age, has regrettably been given a reprieve for the time being, though his expiration, too, is inevitable. They are doomed to remain a disappointment to their forebears, whose good name has been sullied by this generation’s myriad inadequacies. A shame, for their family has shown such greatness through the years.

On a couple occasions I have been offered one of these for no lie, about $2000 each time. I regret not taking them for flipping purposes no matter how much work they might need

Funny, I just watched that the other night. I dream of being the Joker to a pile of burning E65s. Except I wouldn’t stop at half of them.

They would be easily flipped, in fact we had one abandoned here a couple of years ago and sold it for $6000, but if I flipped one I’d want to be sure I’d never see the damn thing again.

I still like them. I'd love to tear one down and fix it back up again, just for sentimental, 16-year-old me reasons.

Looking for E65 from about 2002-2005 on the classifieds here in the Netherlands the median price seems to be about €8-9k. Not nearly as cheap as the recent E65 posts on Oppo led me to believe. The cheapest ones I can find are about €6k and have between 300k and 450k km on the odometer.

These are kinda cool, but no, I’d never buy one.

Those things make W220s look like a W126. This is the only fate befitting the E65
(Side note: God damn I love this gif)

Oh indeed. I’ve had that conversation before.
“hey it’s me ___, I bought that (e36,S40, GS300) from you last month and.....”

They are not kinda cool, I assure you. They are heinous and terrible vampires, destroyer of souls.

I’m sure there’s enough room for an LS........

I found 1 here for $2000 USD but with body damage. The once I had were trade in cars with high miles and in rougher shape. A miracle that the dealer gave them $2000 USD for them in the first place.
Here is another for $5500 but I’m positive they’d take a little under $5,00o or $5,000 cash in hand for it. Not too high in mileage..
I bet i could get this S-Class for $3000 USD

Absolutely agree, and I’ve been into too many W220s to like them much. Nice when they’re right, though, and if you’re going to live with one it may as well have a V12!

More than enough. That bay fits a 4-cam V12, it will swallow an LS with room for turbos.

So have a super luxury sleeper car. I see no problems with this.

Those douchy wheels really knock the price down. The E65 hasn’t been a victim of that much here.
This
one is the second cheapest I can find out of 409 cars in Germany on one of its biggest sites. 2004 730d, 500k km(!) (311k miles), taxi paint/wrap, no mentioned faults, €4500.

My thoughts exactly. It really depends on the individual car. I bought mine for $17,000 and have since put $3800 into maintenance. Another oppo has an identical car that he payed $9000, but has put more than what he payed for it back into it. It’s a roll of the dice. That being said, I love mine and wouldn't trade it for anything, except for maybe a W221 S65/S600.

wow that is one used car! Look clean from the pictures. €3,800 is top dollar (kicking and screaming). I’d start at €3,000

Go E38 or Go Home.
E65 makes the e38 look like a corolla in reliability.

Except most of the luxury items wouldn't work.

Valve seals? Timing chain rails? Coolant pipes and valey pan gaskets? Or all of the above while you’re there?

There’s one of these near me for $2500 at a dealer. They’ve been trying to sell it for 6 months. I kinda want it but I know it’d bankrupt me before I’ve driven it 2 feet.

God I love the bangle butt E65. Sad sight seeing it like this.

(hyponotizing): No you don’t... no you don’t... no you don’t...
Seriously, regardless of the styling, these are awful cars.

Visually stunning, mechanically terrible. Unfortunate.
I guess it was to be expected to a certain point. The E65 was the beginning of BMW’s major shift, so some “growing pains” were to be expected. But they’re still BMW, they should’ve managed the transition a little better.
